From the Feb. 17, 1971 episode of “The Johnny Cash Show,” the first part of this clip is well-known. It was officially released last year on the “Best Of” collection issued by Cash’s estate and is probably elsewhere on YouTube. But (in my opinion) the first song is incomplete without the second. You have to see the two wildly disparate songs in succession to have the context to properly appreciate both performances. To segue directly from the hell-raising tomfoolery of “Sue” to the earnest and tender “Flesh and Blood” and have both songs work perfectly is one hell of an accomplishment.
